because my back is sore and i'm really, really tired...

... and because i posted a whole bunch of epic blog entries in a row over the last week (scroll down to catch up if you haven't stopped by in a while), i'm totally cheating tonight and simply leaving a thought on which you can ruminate... perhaps even comment...

is there any singular task that better defines your circle of friends, and who might no longer be in it, than the annual writing of christmas cards?

You still send Christmas cards?

Actually, the whole Christmas card thing reminds me of who has died!

Like Cod, I've had cards from my financial adviser and my dentist. I think they have ulterior motives.

i love sending christmas cards! but i notice that, each year, the list changes -- new people are added, others are dropped -- and i realized it's a very telling undertaking.

and, when it gets to the point where i ask myself, "do i really want to spend a stamp on this person?", i know it's time to remove him/her from the list.

I don't send Christmas cards, either. But there's an old friend of the family (she knew my grandmother quite well) who sends the most elaborate card: it's full colour, maybe 5x7, and professionally printed. It's a chronicle of her adventures of the past year. It always includes at least one picture of her riding an animal of some sort (horse, elephant, etc.), her posing in a fancy hat in some third-world location, a few extra commas, and at least one spelling mistake. We've never actually met the woman, but my sister and I find her card to be a highlight of the holiday season.
