thunderstorm ponderings: why can’t sandra bullock rob a casino?

so, a band of rather nasty thunderstorms moved through toronto around 5pm today, bringing with it high winds, heavy rain and a deeeeelightful drop in temperatures. it went from 88F to 68F in about 15 minutes. sometimes, mother nature does toss me a bone.

as i pulled up the blinds on my wall of windows and watched day turn to night, i paused to reflect on the following:

* why is there no Ocean’s 11 or 12 or 13 featuring an all-female cast? i mean, if george and brad and matt and don can all get together to make a fun caper flick, why can’t gwyneth and cameron and sandra and emma (thompson, because i ♥ her)? or drew and cate and hilary and halle? heck, any combination of 11 actress of A- and B-list calibre would do. does hollywood think no one would come to that party? i’d be first in line! it should be noted that there is a female-driven heist movie in the works but, despite co-starring diane keaton and queen latifah, it also stars scientology robot and soulless humanoid katie holmes, which means i will not be first in line. this thought crossed my mind when an Ocean’s 13 commercial ran on the TV behind me.

* why, whenever i have to have my blood taken, does every single medical technician prepping the needle and tubes refuse to believe that they won’t be able to find a usable vein in my right arm? each time, as they reach for my right arm, i say, “the veins in there are hidden. they’re tiny. no one can ever find them. please use my left arm, where the veins are also tiny but somewhat find-able.” and, each time, i get the exact same response. “well, i’ll just give it a try!” WHY? they never find a vein. NEVER. and yet each plucky pricker somehow believes that she will be christopher columbus, discovering the arterial wonders of my right arm. SHE WON’T. this thought crossed my mind as i watched the storm and looked down at the big purple bruise in the crook of my left arm, from which the blood was eventually taken.

* for all its revamping and retooling, Canada’s Next Top Model is nothing more than an hour of available advertising space for anyone who wants their products shamelessly placed throughout the show. it is RIDICULOUS how obvious the product placement is on this show. brand names are always very clearly turned to camera, with contestants often extolling an item's virtues in dialogue so scripted it’s laughable. “i’m hungry. OMG, i’m going to make one of these Delisio™ pizzas! i absolutely LOVE Delisio™ pizzas! while i wait for it to bake, i’m going to apply some of this Olay™ moisturizer. i just love how it makes my skin SO soft!” spotting each shameless plug would make for an excellent drinking game, though you’d likely be rendered unconscious before the first commercial break. this thought crossed my mind as i looked out the window at the street below and wondered how or why anyone would go out for a walk in this weather...if he was a CNTM contestant, he’d have blown away by now.

* sami the cat, as pictured in a previous entry, has been adopted. not by me. while a part of me was sad that i’d missed my chance, a bigger part of me knows that the OSPCA gets dozens of new cats every month, most of which are thoroughly lovable. this thought crossed my mind when the windows vibrated after an exceptionally loud thunderclap and i thought, “if i had a cat, i wonder if it would be afraid of thunderstorms.”

Vickie! Why don't *you* write Ocean's for Girls? And then send it to Flower Films, and Drew will produce it and star in it, and she'll call up Sandra and Emma and all the other smart girls, and we'll be all set! Ms. Barrymore is always saying that if you don't like what you see in Hollywood - get in there and change it!

I was watching a clip of Ocean's 13 this morning - the one where Bernie Mac and Andy Garcia try to trick Al Pacino - and I thought to myself, "Oooh, I really hope Al sticks it to all of you smart asses in the end!" I could picture him in the final scene with his arms crossed over his chest and a clever look on his face - "Sorry boys!" And then all 13 of them would get arrested and have to work on a chain gang! It'll never happen, but I've had it up to my eyeballs with George, Matt, and Brad. Ecch!

i have the EXACT same problem getting blood taken. except BOTH my arms are brutal. thankfully i'm not afraid of needles or blood because i'm virtually a pin cushion for those 15-20 minutes.

i preface every blood-taking with "i have really deep veins in both arms" and they're all gung-ho-ey with "let me just try!" they then proceed with the tapping of my arm, the "oooooh... um... let me try the other arm," more tapping, the "keep your fist closed," even though my fist has been clenched the whole time, then go back to the original arm... sigh. yup, it's an ordeal.

they usually eventually just butterfly it. and it usually has to be done from my hand. not that i'm super-veiny there but it's better than the arms.

yup. good times.

I'm not sure why women would want to make Ocean's #, but if you think so, could we just not sacrifice Drew?

When I blood drawer person approaches, I first ask for the number of years and draws they have in their experience. Then, I clap my hand over the vein that I know (because it's MY arm) doesn't give up blood. We go from there.

Get a cat.

:-D

OMG. having blood drawn from your hand is SOOO painful! i remember one of the technicians resorting to the back of my (right) hand once...shoving the needle in and then moving it around LOOKING FOR THE VEIN!!! i was dying.

there some poor guy in the room waiting to have his blood drawn, and i watched him go completely white as he watched what they were doing to me.

jess, i think there *are* women writing female-driven versions of movies like Ocean's 13, i just think they're being passed over.

lou, a cat remains the plan. sami is gone, but in his place were a whole new batch of cute ones.

I didn't choose Ozzy--he chose me! The same happened with my previous two cats, but Ozzy was a shelter rescue, and he gave me THE LOOK that said "Get me outta here!" The right cat will choose you. Just give it time. ;-)

1) There will be no Chix 13 movie because all of Hollywood's actresses are busy... playing girlfriends, crack hos, and moms... because that is all women are in real life. Really, why should there be any other options? [sarcasm clarification goes here]

2) I am a vampire. I have no veins in my arms. Once they stuck a needle in, and not only did nothing, NOTHING come out, but when they pulling it out, you could actually peek into the bloodless needle hole! It was kind of cool. I have also had the stubborn, "Oh, yes, I WILL FIND IT!" determined blood-drawer moving the needle IN my arm. Not pleasant. My doctor's office was unsuccessful with drawing blood, so I actually had to go to the blood bank (where they obviously have tons of practice) and get it done there. It only took, um, three jabs that time. (sigh)

3) Yes, kitties will choose you. My sweet Maggie K was in a room that was a sea of some 30 kitties. Others were more pushy or rubby or attention-grabby. But after 10 minutes or so of cats crawling all over me, she just sauntered over, crawled into my lap, got some chin scratches, and took a 5 minute cat nap. When she was done, she just sauntered away. When I came back the next week to get her, she was so unassuming that the shelter people said, "Mmmm... which cat?" even though she had been there three months. I took her home, and she is THE BEST CAT EVER! (end of happy Kitty-Choosing-Owner-Story)

Hmm, I started thinking about my ideal 13 on Sunday - names like Anjelica Huston, Juliette Lewis, Kathy Bates, Gina Gerson, and Hilary Swank started floating around my head, along with Drew Barrymore, of course, and then it hit me. THAT movie isn't going to get made. But the one starring this 13 will:

1) Lindsay Lohan
2) Mischa Barton
3) Nicole Richie
4) Paris Hilton
5-6) Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen
7) Britney Spears (amazing in Crossroads!)
8) Jessica Simpson
9) Jessica Alba
10) Jessica Biel
11) Avril Lavigne
12) Mandy Moore
13) Cameron Diaz (as the old timer)

I'm officially depressed.

AHEM.

we'll have no maligning of jessica biel on this blog.

and your list (save for JB) TERRIFIES me. that said, more than half of those girls will wind up in rehab or dead (sad but true) before they ever hit 30.

No malignancy intended! I always loved that she was the rebel girl who left Seventh Heaven behind. She only made the list for being named Jessica and allegedly cavorting with Justin Timberlake. We could totally call Scarlett Johansson instead - she's really good at playing a Skankosaurus Rex.
