we interrupt the summer to bring you an early TIFF rant...

that's right, a pre-pre-film festival rant about what the folks at TIFF dreamed up for 2007. rather than repost it here, just check out the moviepie blog for all the asshatty details.

Oh dear.

I can understand why they're trying to introduce passes with less hassle for more casual fest 'goers. And picking movies can be intimidating -- though having TIFF pick them does feel like you'll only get leftovers. (Maybe they could enlist independent critics to put together pass combos.)

But the simplifying the product line-up thing is pretty silly. Once you figure out what a ten-coupon book is, the thirty-coupon is really easy to understand. And surely it's been a big seller in the past, so it seems like it was working pretty well as-is...

it's TIFF way of making more money. if the 30 coupon book is so intimidating, why is it always the first to sell out??

i blame noah cowan. just, you know, in general. for everything. all the time. ;-)

You didn't actually believe that film fests are designed to give access to new films? It's about money.

oh, for sure. but TIFF is already gouging audiences to a ridiculous degree -- i mean, $20+ for ONE ticket? -- so this just adds insult to wallet injury. again.
