ah, yes, the oscar cake!
traditionally, it was always the entenmann's devil's food with marshmallow icing cake. we only ever bought it on oscar weekend, for oscar night, so i started calling it "oscar cake" and it stuck.
but a few years ago, groceries in canada stopped selling it. (cue: PANIC.) they still sold it in the states, but -- given when the oscars happen: late winter -- we were never in buffalo at the time, and oscar cake only keeps for so long.
in its absence, we started making our own. devil's food cake and a white whoopie-pie filling as the icing. ten times better than entenmann's! :-D
the traditional oscar cake reappeared in stores last year or the year before, can't remember, so we rejoiced and bought one. but it has, once again, vanished completely.
so, yesterday, mom made the cake! :-D (photo coming soon.)
