T.K.N.?

earlier tonight, i went to my meditation group. i’ve talked about it before, and how much i enjoy it and the people who attend. it’s a really solid, warm environment and one where, occasionally, you get a little food for thought in addition to yoga or a body scan or some qigong.

during our mid-session discussion break, one of the regulars was recounting a road trip he’d been on, and a tiny, middle-of-nowhere diner along a desolate stretch of route 66. while he waited for his food, he perused a wall filled with quotations. among them, he read one that said:

“before you speak, ask yourself: is it true? is it kind? is it necessary?”

even though the quotation is centuries old, it resonated with me. too often we speak – or act or even write – without thinking and, even when we do think (or think we’re thinking), we still wind up saying things that aren’t true, kind or necessary. i know that’s certainly the case for me.

other folks in the group were equally struck by the phrase, and we jokingly decided to ask ourselves “LNK?” whenever we remember. i’m gonna try. if you feel like adopting it, too, go right ahead.

I would have to add "Is it funny?"

And shoot, what's true anyway?

i think the "true" part refers to not spreading rumours or gossiping, and dealing in fact rather than speculation.

i do like "is it funny?" though.
