june is eleven weeks from now
yesterday, i found out from a fellow tenant that my super is out of the country until JUNE, so i have a while to go before i can get the scoop on what the hell's going on in the apartment next to mine. turns out, she left at the start of february for a four-month visit to colombia (where she's originally from) to decide whether she wants to move back there permanently. and i felt kind of queasy as soon as i heard this bit of news.
my super, who's amazing, was one of the reasons i chose this apartment. she's run the building for 20 years, and lives in it, so she's always had a vested interest in making sure it's clean, quiet and safe. she's done an excellent job on all three fronts and, as a single woman living alone, i've always felt extra-secure knowing that a tough little woman was in charge.
but now there's a chance she may retire. and leave. and that makes me nervous.

But there's a stand-in super, right? There can't just be NO SUPER for four or five months. Without a super, tenants and strangers are liable to start banging doors opened and closed 20 times a day!
there's a friend of the super's, who comes in to clean, put out the trash/recycling, collect rent cheques, etc.
but she doesn't live here, nor does she know the tenants (i think most don't even realize the actual super isn't here), nor would she be able to do anything if a crisis arose.
to be honest, i'm not actually sure *what* would happen if there was an emergency -- like if someone's pipe burst in the middle of the night, or if a strung-out prostitute were to pass out in the elevator.
