message received

twice today, valentine's day, the universe gave me a gentle but firm smack in the back of the head. they were smacks i think i needed, and know i appreciated.

the first occurred when i went to my chiropractor's office and, as i do every time i visit, pulled a random card from a deck of motivational messages that's always stacked at the reception desk. i pull one each time i'm there to see what pearl of wisdom or insight or guidance the card might offer. on one side is written a sentence or two, which provides the governing message, and the other side is a more detailed explanation.

today, i picked up the deck, randomly selected a card and then read it:

"my future is not about my past."

and the reverse explained (in more eloquent terms than i'm using here) that the future is open to possibility, a blank slate, and that retelling or dwelling on negative stories/moments/feelings/experiences from the past only serves to keep you stuck there.

it's nothing i didn't already know, or hadn't heard before, but it seemed especially potent, and fitting, today.

then, tonight, a friend of mine posted the following video on facebook. i absolutely loved it and, again, it was exactly the message i needed at precisely the right time:
