in short

1. looks like the entertainment magazine is no more. so, much to my profound chagrin, that's the end (for now) of some of the most fun writing i've ever done.

2. after not hearing from the sigmoidoscopy clinic this week, i called them to see about a booking an appointment. and, after waiting on hold, i was told they never received a referral from dr. textbook. so, despite having called dr. textbook's office on monday to request the referral (which they were supposed to send by EOD monday), and despite dr. textbook's insistence that i go have this test, my referral never happened. so, i called dr. textbook's office again today to ask what had happened, and no one ever called me back.

3. i have worked epic hours this week, and i am very very tired. i was so tired and frustrated at work today that i made myself leave the office for lunch. i went for a walk, went to whole foods (where i bought a make-your-own sandwich... which i then found out was on sale!), ran into a friend (twice) en route to WF and then again on my way back to the office. i felt better this afternoon. but still worked until 7pm and am STILL not finished.

4. i am having crapola dinners of late. they're not even dinners as much as "after-work snacks." by the time i get home around 8pm each night, i no longer feel like making a big dinner. (the heat doesn't help in this regard.) so, i've been having cereal and/or chips. and, since starting this new job, i've lost about four pounds. i shouldn't be losing any pounds, let alone four.

5. my new merrells have shipped from calgary and are on their way to me as i type this.

Lordy.

Grrrr......doctors.

Yay.....Merrells!

(((Vic))) so sorry about the end of the entertainment writing. Everyone is taking away what you love best. :-(

I worry about you working such long frustrating hours and not eating properly. Love Mom Moob

thanks {{{{{{{{{moob}}}}}}}}}. i actually worry, too. there are epic levels of stress hormones coursing through my veins, and i wake up every morning with a chest-tightening wave of anxiety.

none of that is good.

and, yesterday, our department was briefed on the new strategy for this particular publication... a strategy that might as well have been called "let's kill vickie!" because it involves even more work... but no sign of more hires to help tackle it.

If the "new strategy" means more work for you, that also means more money. Tell them this. Wear your new colorful shoes and stand up tall.

When Hop doesn't eat food, I give him an Ensure protein shake. He likes them! And they are full of the nutrients that bodies need. Like YOUR body. You could drink one along with your Chex mix and cupcake.

Doctors.

if i get to the point where i'm downing ensure for dinner, i'll know it's time to quit. ;-)

i actually did have a talk with my boss today about money. namely, that i'm concerned that i'm the lowest-paid freelancer in the department, even though i work the hardest. he must have done some math because, later, he came to me and said, if i can, i should take off early on a friday or two and just bill for the whole day.

thing is -- and i told him this -- i don't foresee actually being ABLE to take off early on a friday, just because of the volume of work that needs doing.

but i get the sense that people are finally realizing i'm not kidding when i talk about reaching my limit, and not being able to carry on like this for much longer. my brain is melting.

oh, and i heard from dr. textbook's office today -- apparently, they DID fax the referral back on tuesday. the nurse said they'd fax it again today.

They are taking advantage of you. (((Vic))) you are one in a million.......threaten them. Tell them what would make you happier with your job.

Connie is right. You aren't an hourly employee. You are an employee with a burden of work that has to be done. That's a salaried employee.

Take off early on Friday my ass.

Lou makes a very good point -- it's really their problem to fit the work required into the hours you have available! Any way to predict what won't get done if you work regular hours, and flag that to them in advance? One downside -- it sounds like the stuff you most enjoy doing might be the stuff that wouldn't make the cut. :(

BTW, I much prefer the taste of Boost to Ensure, though I agree it's a bad sign if you go that route!

good points all around. thanks, all!

i actually *have* spoken with my boss about all this, and he's said that ensuring all the work gets done is actually my editor's responsibility, not mine. that, if stuff isn't finished, *he's* the one who should be staying late to finish it, not me.

thing is, that editor has one foot out the door already, is barely engaged in what we're doing... so i've had to manage HIM. on friday, for example, my to-do list was epic, so i asked him to handle ONE thing (which was due to the client by noon)... and, at the end of the day, he came to me to say he hadn't finished it. he actually started to ask ME if i could do it, then stopped himself (realizing how ridiculous that request would sound).

this week, because it's supposed to be SUPER-hot and SUPER-humid out, i don't mind staying at the office late (because of the air-conditioning!) but, once temperatures cool off, i may start instituting a firm seven-hour work day.
