germy randomness
i realized this afternoon that i haven’t blogged in a few days, so i figured i should pop in lest anyone think i’d slipped into unconsciousness after one too many doses of nyquil. thankfully, i have not. i’m still germy, but recovering quickly. i’m in the congested-head portion of the cold at the moment, but i hope to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by sunday. or, at the very least, i hope to be sounding less like i have giant wads of cotton shoved up my nose.
in lieu of a lenthy post, some random items:
* did you watch the season finale of LOST? did you love it or hate it or simply get an overwhelming sense of meh? did you cry? did you shake your head? (for the record: i think the flash-forward was a misstep but enjoyed it otherwise.)
* are you watching On the Lot, the new reality show from steven spielberg and Survivor imagineer mark burnett? it’s like American Idol for filmmakers, and it’s a fascinating look at some super-talented, and some decidedly untalented, writer-directors. i’m hoping a woman wins the whole thing.
* did you know that cayenne pepper is magic? seriously. it has all kinds of delightful, healing properties and drinking some in tea or gargling with a cayenne elixir (cayenne + water + honey) actually helps ease the pain of a sore throat. i scoffed at first, but it really does work...and i’ve been putting cayenne pepper in everything i’ve had to eat or drink for the past two days.
* this morning, i went to the screening of what may wind up being the best bad movie of 2007. press restrictions prevent me from revealing the name of the film and my review just yet, but here’s a hint: it stars kevin costner and it is SPECTACULARLY bad. so bad that it’s actually brilliant. i enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons.
and now, i think it’s time to make a smoothie. the temperatures are slowly dropping (ah, sweet relief) as thunderstorms and a cold front move in.
dear mother nature: there’s no need for it to be 88F in toronto in may. thank you.

I'm glad it works and all, but it's just so hard to imagine!
i think it helps that my cayenne pepper is about seven years old, so it's lost most of its punch. i can easily put a 1/2 teaspoon in about 4 oz. of water and sip it, no problem.
with fresh cayenne, i'm sure i'd be DYING.

you know my feelings about the cayenne. or maybe it's the cayenne's feelings towards me. i thought there was a chance i was allergic (maybe that's why my throat felt like it was closing) but alas, ryan said he puts cayenne in his steak marinades all the time. so no.
no i don't watch ON THE LOT but i finally got around to watching LOST and i loved it. i know most people want answers to certain things (ex. the four-toed statue, jacob, etc.) but i'm also a big believer in the big picture RE: the show so i've always been very happy. the only question that was bugging me for the longest time was finally answered in the episode before the finale (the looking glass) so i'm all good.

i didn't like the flash-forward because i think it gives a false, and potentially depressing, sense of what's to come. does it mean their lives suck in the future? does it mean we're going to have to watch a season where we follow the castaways off the island? please no.
they might have painted themselves into a corner with that final reveal...unless they decide that it's only one of many possible futures, in which case they'll have once again misled the audience.
the most dramatic moment (for me) of the entire season was the jacob reveal, which actually gave me goosebumps all over my body and prevented me from sleeping that night. i was THAT freaked out.
because ben was actually (well, seemingly) telling the truth about naomi and her people not being who they say they are, things obviously go down when they are "rescued." obviously jack being jack, will regret his actions, as the fast-forward has revealed, and is constantly haunted by them.
i hope we don't see what happens when they're off the island. that would be a disaster.
and while i'm fairly analytical when i watch most shows, i try not to with LOST. i try not to think too much and just sort of enjoy it and get swept up in it all. it actually caught me off guard that naomi isn't who she claims to be. it shocked me that charlie actually died. it bugs me that they killed mr. friendly. even though he was the creepy guy that took walt off the island (um, speaking of walt... reeeeeeeeeecast, please), i was actually starting to like him. plus, i hope the producers give us a rousseau back story. i totally dig that character. oh, and i miss michael. well, not so much michael. just harold perrineau.
but, see, i think they're copping out if they make it so that The Others turn out *not* to be bad guys. and they need to decide whether this show has a paranormal aspect or not (e.g., jacob the disembodied voice; nestor carbonell staying the same age for, what, 30 years???; etc.).
i agree that we need a rousseau backstory, and i think they'll give us one. or, at least, a glimpse into what she's been up to for 16 years in the jungle.
no one is ever really dead on the Lost island, in the same way that no one was ever really dead in the Buffyverse. so, charlie may *seem* dead, but so did locke. and shannon and boone have had multiple guest spots since their deaths. and i know you hope your friend michelle comes back to the show, or gets work anywhere, but methinks no. ;-)
walt was cute once. now he's been gone for more than a year and has grown into his creepy, awkward phase.
okay, I'm kind of with both of you. I *hate* the idea of their lives falling to pieces once they get off the island. I kind of hope it's going to end up being like Desmond or Hiro's (oops, wrong show) glimpse into the future that might be (though I also agree that it would kind of be a cop out).
I also tend to throw analysis and rationale out the window for this show, having faith that it's actually going somewhere. But believe you me, if I'm disappointed in 2010...well, I'll likely just slink off bitterly ;-)
i think they're also going to have a problem maintaining momentum and interest in the show now that they're adopting the abbreviated-season format. as it stands, we have to wait at least EIGHT MONTHS for the next episodes.
will people even remember where the show left off?
will people still care? if they have so much time in between to find other shows to love?
i will definitely still care. i'm a loyal girl. ;)
plus, i've had practice. i've learned to love the january premieres of 24 for a couple of seasons now.
yeah, but doesn't 24 kind of wrap up most of its storylines by one season's end and start fresh -- with a new 24-hour period -- the next season? so, you could conceivably miss an entire season and still be able to pick up when the new one starts.
not so much with lost.
Lost has yet to complete *any* of its story arcs, and it ends each season with about a thousand cliffhangers. so, they *need* people to be hungry enough for resolution that they tune back in after more than half a year.
you make a good point. though jack bauer's bad days are starting to get a little tedious.
but LOST won't lose me as a viewer or a fan... i'm way too committed to it. i may not like having to wait till next year for it to start up again but it doesn't make me any less interested.
my concern is: what if most viewers aren't like you, though? what if ratings drop even more than they already have?
will ABC honour its commitment to the show, or will we be cut off halfway through the 2008-09 season?
hopefully, the Lost producers are upping their game enough that it won't be an issue.
