if

several months ago, i wrote lyrics for a song i called “if.”

the words are very simple, and the sentiment likewise so.

what if i told you how i felt about you?

i wrote them for a reason. for me. it was personal. a specific idea and specific ponderings.

but more than just for myself, i wrote them for anyone who’s struggled with the uncertainty of whether to reveal feelings. wondered whether to tip their hand. wanted to say what’s in their heart but feared what might happen if they did.

what if i offered you my love... would you accept it?

it shouldn’t really be an issue, should it? to say to someone “i like you” or “i miss you” or “i love you” if that's what we truly feel. because aren’t those all good things? wouldn’t we all like to hear them? shouldn’t we be eager to share those thoughts with someone we care about or for whom we have fondness or affection?

what if we did?

love is vital.

and life is short. i was reminded of that on the weekend. certainly, too short to worry about walking on eggshells when it comes to telling someone they’re loved.

even if you're scared to do it.

I love those lyrics, you know that.

The worry over when and how to express affection happens because it's a risk. If you express yourself with the hope or expectation that the person will return the feelings, you just might sink yourself.

When I was in grad school, the poetry professor used to tell me that I had to write poems for because I loved to write, no other reason, because they was no guarantee of any other return.

Okay, 30 posts in 30 days has made you shinier than ever. Loving it all. And why shouldn't we say these things? Although in a way, what's scarier? Amazing the effort we go to to make our hearts exist in some safe place like that panic room Victoria Principal used to have in her house in the 80's.

words cannot express how delighted i am that you managed to work victoria principal's panic room into a blog comment.

thank you! :-D
